Frequently Asked Questions

Do you use gelatin in your marshmallows?
Absolutely not! We pride ourselves on being the original manufacturer of gelatin-free, 100% vegetarian and vegan marshmallows. We make our own non-animal based gel using a proprietary formula—rest assured our marshmallows are completely animal-free and utterly heavenly!
Why vegan marshmallows? What’s wrong with gelatin?
Traditional marshmallows contain gelatin, and most people don’t know what gelatin is. Gelatin is derived from the bones, skin, and organs of animals. Many people choose not to eat gelatin for ethical, religious, and health reasons (gelatin can transmit BSE, Mad Cow Disease!). Up until a few years ago, there were no gelatin-free marshmallows, and many of us went through smore and rice crispy treat withdrawal. It was just horrible. Then Sweet & Sara came along. Now everyone can enjoy scrumptious, gelatin-free, vegetarian and vegan marshmallows!
Do your marshmallows taste like “real” marshmallows?
Vegetarians AND non-vegetarians alike tell us THEY TASTE BETTER! The flavor, texture, and whole Sweet & Sara experience far surpasses conventional marshmallows. And yes, they do melt! You’ve got to try it to believe it!
What are some ways to enjoy Sweet & Sara marshmallows?
You can enjoy our marshmallows just as you would any other marshmallow. Dunk them into hot cocoa. Roast them over a campfire to make smores. Melt them into rice crispy treats or on top of your favorite ice cream. Mix them into brownies for a rocky road effect. Dip them in chocolate fondue. Add them to holiday yams. Sweeten coffee or tea, or our favorite, simply enjoy them as they are! The possibilities are endless. Have fun!!!
Rice Crispy Treats:
- 1 box of Sweet & Sara marshmallows
- 3 Tablespoons of margarine
- 5 cups of crispy rice cereal

Melt the margarine in a pot over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted (about 10 minutes). Remove from heat. Add the crispy rice cereal and mix until well coated. Spray an 8" square pan with oil and press mixture down evenly with fingers and chill in refrigerator for about 15 minutes or until firm. Cut into squares and enjoy! Warning: these are addictive!
What is the shelf life of Sweet & Sara’s marshmallows and smores?
Our marshmallows and smores should be stored in the refrigerator for maximum freshness. This preserves their taste and texture. In the refrigerator or freezer, our marshmallows and smores remain fresh for 6 months. Since Sweet & Sara treats are best enjoyed at room temperature, let them “thaw” a bit before eating. Our treats can be left out in a cool, non-humid area for up to 8 weeks!
Your products are refrigerated - what happens if they are left outside?
As long as they are in a cool area, they can be left out unrefrigerated at room temperature for 2 months. For longer shelf life, marshmallows and smores should be stored in the refrigerator or freezer for maximum freshness. This preserves their taste and texture.
If I’m in New York City, can I pick up treats from the Sweet & Sara kitchen?
We have several retailers in NYC, which carry our Sweet & Sara vegan marshmallows and smores, but if you happen to be in our neighborhood (LIC, Queens) you can make an appointment with us to pick up some treats. (7 train to 33rd st. 33rd st/ off Queens blvd)
Are your marshmallows and smores gluten-free? Peanut/Tree-nut free?
Our marshmallows, rocky road bark, and rice crispy treats do not contain gluten but are processed in a facility that processes wheat. While we use good manufacturing practices, have strict cleaning protocols, and our equipment is cleaned thoroughly between production runs, trace amounts may exist and we cannot guarantee there is no cross contamination. Our products are made on equipment which have also come in contact with peanuts and tree nuts.
Some of the marshmallows are slightly bigger and some slightly smaller than others - why aren’t they all exactly shaped?
Our delicious marshmallows are made in small batches by hand and not mass produced with industrial machines.
Do you plan to make organic marshmallows?
We hope to produce organic vegan marshmallows in the near future, but right now the high cost of organic ingredients would mean we’d have to charge our customers more than we’re willing to for our marshmallows.
How long does it take to make marshmallows?
It takes 72 hours / 3 days to make a marshmallow and 2 days to make a smore. Totally serious!
I don't like Google Checkout, can I pay another way?
We can send you an invoice using Google Checkout or we you mail us a check.
How many marshmallows are in a package? How big are the smores?
There are about 16-20 marshmallows in a package. The smores are 3" squares and about an inch in height.
Are your products Kosher certified?
Yes! Sweet & Sara is proud to be kosher certified by Rabbi Zev Schwarcz of the International Kosher Council.
How long will it take to receive my order?
Orders take on average 3 business days to process and depending on the shipping destination it can take up to 5 business days. International orders take 7-14 days. We are known for our speedy service and try to process most orders within 24-48 hours.
Why is shipping so high?
We dont inflate the shipping charges! Nope. We actually absorb some of the costs. UPS charges an arm and leg. As do all the freight services.
Why is your mascot a bunny rabbit?
When Sara was 11, she fell madly in love with a bunny she adopted, named Skipper, who changed the way she viewed animals. At 13, Sara became a vegetarian, and a year later, vegan. Sara was blessed to have Skipper for over seven years and as little as she was, she made a huge impact on Sara’s life. The mascot represents Sara’s childhood rabbit, Skipper, and her paw of approval that no animals were harmed in the making of Sweet & Sara marshmallows!
What happens if I am not satisfied with my order?
We hope this is never the case but we do have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you are not satisfied with our treats we will replace or refund your order. Please show us a copy of the receipt, it's that simple!
Are there restrictions with coupons?
They apply to all products except the discounted items and seasonals (because of the limited supply)!
